Parent adherence to treatment recommendations can significantly impact client outcomes,, yet adherence to "parent training" too often causes feelings of shame. Parental non-adherence is often misunderstood as "lack of motivation," "resistance," or "poor follow-through." In many cases, caregiver behavior is influenced by stress, trauma history, socioeconomic barriers, cultural experiences, burnout, prior systems involvement and competing contingencies.
